Our Story

SuperMeat is an Israeli Biotechnology startup that organically cultures chicken meat using regenerative technologies. The company was founded to address the technological and ecological challenges in feeding a growing global population. SuperMeat is an ideologically and scientifically driven effort to create a humane, animal-free solution, to nutritional security, which will drastically reduce carbon emissions and increase food safety worldwide.

What is cultured meat?

Cultured meat is made from animal cells, without the use of the animals themselves. The final outcome is an all purpose meat. The production of cultured meat begins by incubating cells in a media that is rich in nutrients. Those nutrients help the cells thrive and divide. It is biologically the same as the meat that comes from animals. Our products will be non GMO and with no animal products besides the original cells.

Why cultured meat anyway?

For the environment:
Industrial meat production has had numerous well-documented negative effects on our environment, such as deforestation, air pollution, water pollution, global warming, water waste, energy waste, species extinction (animal and plant) and more.

On November 29th, 2006, the UN published a report titled “Livestock’s Long Shadow: Environmental Options and Issues”. The report concludes that the livestock agricultural industry is one of the main causes for the current ecological crisis our planet is facing.

In its summary and conclusions section, the report states:
“The livestock sector is a major stressor on many ecosystems and on the planet as whole. Globally it is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gases and one of the leading casual factors in the loss of biodiversity, while in developed and emerging countries it is perhaps the leading source of water pollution.”
For the animals:
Industrial animal agriculture deprives animals of their most basic needs in numerous ways, which are inherent to traditional meat production practices and include but are not limited to confinement, fattening, mutilation, genetic manipulation, forced fertilization and slaughter.
For public health:
Cultured meat has the potential to benefit public health in various areas, such as reducing bacterial resistance, production of reduced fat or non-fat meat, increased general hygiene in meat production, and the prevention of pandemics.
For preventing food crises:
As of March 2016, the world's human population is about 7,400,000,000. It is expected to increase to about 11.2 billion by 2100.
The current meat industry raises and slaughters more than 100 billion animals annually, worldwide. These numbers are projected to increase, globally, in the coming years.

Is cultured meat natural?

Cultured meat is not significantly different from the rice, milk, tomato, meat and broccoli of today’s world. All of the food products we know and love underwent intensive intervention of man, and without it, they would be impossible to consume: either because their production, storage and transport in their natural forms are impossible, inefficient or uneconomical, or because they would've simply been inedible or unpalatable.

Why would people want to eat meat created in a laboratory?

Any food that is on an industrial/agricultural assembly line underwent, at some point in its history, research in a lab to improve its taste, its shelf life, etc. We are working to develop and improve cultured meat products. Once this happens, cultured meat will be produced industrially, in a clean factory (similar to how beer is made) and not in a lab.

There are already vegan meat alternatives. Why do we need cultured meat?

Cultured meat IS MEAT, while meat alternatives aren’t. While meat substitutes are great, there are no vegan products with the ability to fully mimic burgers, steaks, fish etc. down to the last detail.
Also, they are usually more expensive than meat products. We are aiming to produce natural meat products cheaper than industrial meat, but with the same texture and taste.
People love meat and want to continue eating meat. We are here to ensure that meat production will be animal & eco friendly, as well as safe and clean.

What does cultured meat taste like?

Cultured meat is the exact same meat we know; therefore it will taste the same.

Is cultured meat healthier than conventional meat?

Cultured meat has the potential to improve public health in many aspects:
- A decrease in bacterial resistance, as cultured meat is grown with less antibiotics as opposed to conventional meat, which often requires large amounts of antibiotics.
- Cultured meat is a controlled procedure that will allow modifying its nutritional values to the consumer’s health advantage.
- Cultured meat can also be called clean meat, as the increase in general hygiene in meat production helps keep the meat clean and safe for consumers. For example, 70% of U.S. chickens contain cancer-causing arsenic.
- Cultured meat production will prevent pandemics that are associated with conventional meat, such as bird flu, swine flu etc.

There are already other companies making cultured meat. How is SuperMeat different?

SuperMeat is the first company ever to work on cultured chicken meat products for mass production. Eliminating the chicken meat industry is important since numerically, hens are one of the most eaten animals on the planet. Furthermore, it will help to reduce the chance of future pandemics that stem from the crowdedness of hens in factory farms.

When and where can we buy your products?

Currently, our products are in development and are not available for purchase. In order for our products to become an everyday product to be bought in a supermarket, we need your support.

Does cultured meat contain animal products?

One of the purposes of our company is to make cultured meat products without ongoing animal use. We have a unique technology to make that happen, without the use of serum and other animal ingredients. Our products will be suitable for meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans.
